Vegan day 134: Vegan survival at a steakhouse

There is only one person and only one day a year that I would give in to going to a steakhouse– and that’s for my Mom and on Mother’s Day!

Of course I was reluctant but what can I do- it’s Mother’s Day! I tried to take my time getting there hoping to hit traffic.. lol j/k but I ended up getting there early- go figure!
I admit it- a steakhouse is not for me.. or most vegans. Some go by “eat and let eat”… but not really with me lol! I generally dine out vegan, vegetarian or vegetarian friendly. I will make my way through special occasions, birthdays, business functions and events although sometimes it’s not easy. Hey if I have to skip a few here and there- I apologize in advance. This is a process!

Mother’s Day- Steakhouse- no way out!
We went to Benjamin’s Steakhouse in White Plains.

The funny part is I lost a $50 bet with my brother and my Mother “outed” me 22 times using the “V” word. That’s vegan in case you were wondering! She is so not vegan but for sure she is into eating healthy- so I guess you can say she is proud… which of course means a lot.
BUT PLEASE– don’t say VEGAN SO LOUD in a steakhouse- are you trying to get me into a million arguments? lol – not that I mind.. but not today!

I didn’t plan on eating anything. I asked what was in the Organic Mesclun salad- I got the answer that I knew was coming.. “lettuce and tomato”. I giggled and ordered away. My brother said why don’t you ask if they have nuts or whatever, which honestly, I generally do but I guess I wasn’t expecting much. I said they won’t have it- $50 less later lol- they had walnuts and sliced apples. I don’t know why I even ever bet him!

Of course they had vegetable sides- pretty impressive ones I will have to admit. They were served family style and I left with enough food for three more meals! Too funny! I think I get these ideas and feelings from when I went vegan the first time- over 10 years ago. Luckily, times are changing.

Anyway, I had the organic mesclun salad with walnuts and sliced apples; delicious broccoli, asparagus, mushrooms and a simple baked potato; for dessert- berries and sorbet. Once again, I ate like a vegan queen!
