Vegan day 195: Basin Bar Asbury Park

Some of the sensible meat eating theories go way back in time to the Paleolithic diet. This is the one of the “hunters and gathers”. I have written about this before because I can’t but laugh when people try to use this argument with me- as if they go out and club down their own food. I am obviously all about the gathering part- the quest and search for fresh fruits, vegetable, nuts, seeds and berries. As far as hunting goes.. the only hunting that is in my mind on this day was the hunting for this JUICE BAR IN ASBURY PARK lol!

I have two favorite places in Asbury- one I will visit tomorrow and the other is this juice bar called BASIN BAR. This used to be a yoga center and juice bar cafe. Since last year, they have changed their focus and their location. When I’m on a mission and in desire of cold press juice- I WILL FIND IT! It was slightly off the beaten path but well worth the hunt and find! Everyone that works their was super informative, overly helpful and simply delightful! I left loaded with juices for myself and my friends .. and for two days. You would think I was on a juice fast but I’m not- just a raw food diet for one month. Interestingly enough, this whole diet could be a fast in and of itself. A fast away from the every day processed foods that we SO TAKE FOR GRANTED! You would not even realize for a second the scope of processed foods you eat unless you tried hard to eliminate them for even one day. This experience to date has been eye opening for sure.

older version NORWALK

Basin bar modified their focus so that they could put their energies into the growing demand and supply of cold pressed juices. This is different than regular juicing. I only began to learn about this last year when I visiting this very establishment. That’s when I first learned of cold pressed juicing and maximizing the enzymes. I finally moved away from the centrifugal juicer and onto a masticating one. This juice bar ad others however, go a step further to the press machines. That’s where the Norwalk comes in. They were so kind to show me around a little and I was able to appreciate even further the intenseness of these juicers. It was recommended strongly that I switch to a NORWALK. Wow- I just bought my OMEGA! I can’t do that quite yet since they are in the $2000 range but i will dream about it for now until it becomes a reality.

Check out more info on their website:
“Most folks own a ‘centrifugal’ juicer (a spinning blade that shreds vegetables) spitting out juice into a cup and fibrous gunk into a basket. Growing trends favor cold pressed juices from a NORWALK machine suggesting the centrifugal juicers generate heat, pump in oxygen all contributing to plant cell damage, lessening the nutrient benefit. Since there is less waste created from the NORWALK it is a more sustainable process. Cold press is the best in extracting live juice of fruits and vegetables. The machineoperates at low speed preventing heat build-up and oxidation. This imparts to the juice an extremely fine quality and flavor which is unequalled by any other method of juice extraction. Considered an arduous task, requiring additional staff, time and a love to serve others through juice health the product is more expensive than typical juice bar drinks.”

In the meantime, I think I tried every juice there. The fruit based ones are of course incredible and the greens tremendously healthy and even surprisingly delicious. I have to remember to include cayenne in my own juicing – it’s good for circulation and the blood among many other things.
