Vegan day 17: Angelica Kitchen in the East Village

hmmmm why are people afraid of the word vegan?? It’s cult-like.. isn’t it? j/k

Since I am eating vegan- I want to go to vegan restaurants. I think it would be a plus to use the word in the dining literature but I’m ok with organic, plant- based and macrobiotic!

Angelica Kitchen [organic, plant-based cuisine] has been around since 1976. Their motto is: … “fresh, delicious food in an atmosphere where sustainable agriculture and responsible business practices are the main ingredients.” …..”We use first quality organically grown ingredients often served to you less than forty eight hours after harvest. In addition, we use no refined sugars, no preservatives, no dairy, no eggs, no animal products whatsoever.”

ok ok– that’s better than just vegan anyway!! That’s vegan, organic and “locavore”! I just learned that word the other day- it means: a person whose diet consists only or principally of locally grown or produced food.”   This is great because your food would be more fresh, you would be supporting the local farmer and economy and your carbon footprint would be less (less fuel used in transporting crops – “local” instead of from across the country or overseas)! See below for a LOCAVORE APP for your phone!

While I am at it, I might as well define “sustainable agriculture” which is also in this restaurant’s literature: “Sustainable agriculture is a way of raising food that is healthy for consumers and animals, does not harm the environment, is humane for workers, respects animals, provides a fair wage to the farmer, and supports and enhances rural communities.” ~ SUSTAINABLE TABLE (Great site for more information.)

(Today I am sharing with you my meal from earlier which will also be one of my meals tomorrow)

I ordered the Dragon’s Bowl. This is similar to ordering a macro plate at a macrobiotic restaurant. Macro plates will generally include a protein like beans or tofu, a green leafy vegetable, brown rice and seaweed. I love ordering macro plates- I feel they are well balanced and super nutritious.

The Dragon’s Bowl

Beans
Tofu cubes
Kale
Brown rice
Hijiki seaweed
Squash and sweet potato mix

Sesame dressing on the side
(Speaking of sesame, they use sesame shakers on the table instead of salt)

For dessert, lol, of course….
Coconut custard, which I believe was made from tofu. Being that they use all organic ingredients and no preservatives— I’m hoping this is not too much in calories!

Did I stop there? Noooooo!! Lol I also ordered their homemade Organic Brittle from seeds and such and their homemade Spelt Fig Bar! These were both delicious!!

I was just looking at the menu online and I noticed they have Wee Dragon– that’s a half order. I wish I had read that far! lol Since I didn’t see that, it’s good I stuck to my original eating plan- which is always to take home half of my meal. Portion size and control is critical when trying to lose weight or eat healthy!
