Vegan day 28: Hummus Kitchen & Bamboo 52; Midtown NYC

Dinner and drinks: Midtown NYC
I prefer dining in vegan, organic and macrobiotic places for sure, however, the time comes when you have to go with the flow! Last night was a sexy birthday party night out for a special person so I have to shout out the 2 vegetarian friendly places we went to.

(1) Hummus Kitchen on 9th avenue and
(2) Bamboo 52 on 52nd street

It is by no means easy for the healthy vegan to find anything more than lettuce and tomatoes in many venues. I say that meaning no white carbs either! Remember the goal here is to be a HEALTHY vegan.  First stop was Hummus Kitchen. Can someone PLEASE remind me to photograph the food first and EAT it second! I have no pictures for you.. awww! You can take a peak at some photos and the menu on their site. I just searched it and actually was super-pleasantly surprised to see that they even mark their vegan dishes with a V. Who knew? We ordered a few mini plates: hummus, falafel, beets, and cauliflower! Small portions just perfect for tasting everything and one can actually get full! Did you know we are suppose to stop eating before we get full– lol– I spent most of my life not even stopping WAY AFTER I was full! These mini plates come with whole wheat pita bread! They also have a delicious quinoa salad.

Next stop- the birthday party at Bamboo 52! No.. lol.. I didn’t need to eat again, however, they have black rice maki rolls! What? Almost unheard of! I don’t know many places that make black rice sushi but if anyone does- please let me know! We ordered black rice vegetarian rolls and black rice cucumber/ avocado rolls! Delicious!

Is black rice the new brown?” (Storrs 2010)

One of my favorite podcasts is the Nutritional Diva– this is her information on different types of rice.

I can’t forget the almond vegan birthday cake for Nicole! That was so good that I had two pieces throughout the night! “Just because it’s vegan, doesn’t mean it’s healthy!”  I will say this a lot!  Calories are calories yes, but somewhere deep in the vegan mind– I sometimes get a free pass– and yes.. because it’s vegan! lol

The cake was from Lifethyme Natural Market on 6th avenue in Greenwich Village. You can order vegan birthday cakes there with alternative flours as well!
