Vegan day 60: SOUEN on 13th- Macrobiotic in NYC

Another trip to SOUEN– this time the one on 13th street (NYC)!
When I find myself eating too many wraps and sandwiches, I need to take a step back- even if they are healthy.

Home base for me as far as meals go is definitely a macro meal. A macro meal is a balance of seaweed, greens, brown rice and a protein like beans or tofu. Many macro meals additionally include fresh vegetables. This food is usually organic, local, unrefined and simple. There are no additives. I will make my own version of this from scratch tomorrow.

Today was SOUEN – a cozy spot over my Union Square that has an amazing selection of macrobiotic choices. Macrobiotic is generally dairy free and unprocessed, however fish may be offered and that is the “not” vegan part of it. This “MACRO MEAL” includes kale, chick peas, brown rice, seaweed, squash, broccoli, carrot and a sesame dressing.

Speaking of trips- please take a trip down to the bottom of this blog to the pyramid section. Take a look at the macrobiotic food pyramid, the vegan food pyramid and the US food pyramid.

A few personal notes:
~ The Macrobiotic Pyramid as I know it goes up to fish. I have never seen the others at the very top offered but I’m sure there are always exceptions.
~ The Macrobiotic Pyramid focuses on grains but they are all unrefined whole grains as opposed to the US food pyramid which suggests only 50% be whole grain.

~ The US Food Pyramid has come along way- they even knocked it down so that it reads left to right. The US food pyramid as any other US agency is still heavily influenced by big business. It’s all about politics- but personally I think it’s a lot better than before. Obviously, I disagree with the refined carbohydrates and the dairy- not too mention the meat!

~ The Vegan Pyramid is the best! lol It puts vegetables and fruits first! Actually, I would go for a vegan macrobiotic combination adding seaweed, fermented products and sprouting into the vegan pyramid. I would suggest more nuts on the vegan pyramid and less fortified dairy substitutes. I feel a “Vitamin GEE” pyramid coming soon! hahaha

“And finally, the most important macrobiotic lifestyle Tip: chewing! Let’s chew our food at least 30 times so we may truly take the time to taste and savor the delicious food nature has provided us.” ~ SOUEN

My 1st trip to SOUEN during this blog was Vegan Day 13– check it out!
